Toilet Makes Humanure

Print

The Rhizome Collective, an Austin group devoted to sustainable living, received approval from the City of Austin for a new composting toilet. The outhouse includes two toilets, but only one is functional at any given time.

The basic technology is simple: you do your business, and instead of flushing, you toss a cup full of sawdust down the toilet. After one side of the underground vault beneath the outhouse gets full, it is closed for a year. Then the other side is used.

After a year, the closed side of the vault is opened to reveal usable topsoil, also known as "humanure."
